Culture War

Filed at 1:05 pm under Politique by Stephen

Winning the cultural war is a long war as I see it. Messes are made much faster than they are cleaned up. It takes longer to build a wall than it does to destroy one.

The 20th century saw a significant turn of the United States toward the left as a whole. If we look at what our cousins in Europe have done with their once grand societies, we can get a basic picture of what will happen to our own country if allow this slide to continue. There is one glaring difference though. When Europe began it’s descent into mediocrity the United States was there to play guardian for the Europeans. If the United States were to follow the European’s suit who would watch over us? England? France? Japan? Australia? Denmark? Then there’s Russia, China, Iran, Venezuela, North Korea and co. that all wish us harm. Who will be our guardian angel?

England and France both have huge domestic problems of their own to face and therefore cannot be relied upon to come to our aid. Japan has a rapidly aging of it’s population and other troubling domestic issues. Australia is the closest thing to a cousin we have anymore, and they are dealing with the same drift leftwards that face here. The difference is that they are losing their battle. Our allies have more trouble than we do.

We have nowhere else to turn for help. As Bill Bennet says at the end of his radio show everyday, “America is the last best hope of mankind.”

All that is necessary for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing. I’m not sure that I would qualify as a good man, but I refuse to do nothing.

Taxes

Filed at 12:12 pm under Politique by Stephen

The tax system we have in the US is unbelievably complex. It is horribly complex to the point where most people can’t even prepare their own taxes. It’s designed so that the taxpayer doesn’t think about how much of their income they actually pay in taxes. The employer takes them out of the paycheck before the employee ever sees the paycheck. Uncle Sam gets paid before the taxpayer. I think that is rediculous.

Taxes should be flatter, if not completely flat. Everyone pays the same percent of taxes. On top of that, I think the government should stop acquiring taxes through payroll taxes. People should have to actually prepare their own taxes every month. If people actually saw what they were paying in taxes every month they would put a stop to much of the rediculous spending in washington and in their own states. People don’t miss the money they have never seen. If it becomes painful to pay taxes, than people will not want to pay as much of it.

If we want to fix our taxes in this country, lets give the power back to the taxpayer. Unless we get the general public involved we will never get the situation resolved.

School, Elections, and other stuff.

Filed at 1:59 pm under Life and Politique by Stephen

School

College has started back and I am taking 15 semester hours. I have French II, American Government, World Literature II, Sociology and Music Appreciation.

So far it hasn’t been too bad. French is interesting, but I’m having a bit of a hard time with it for some reason. I cannot say enough good things about my American Government class. I look forward to it every day I have that class. It’s definitely my cup of tea. World Literature II is a tad boring and I find it to be more than a little pointless. It reminds me of what my Dad likes to call “navel gazing”. I don’t really care that much about why some writer thought it clever to make his writing impossible to understand without hours of blabbing. Voltaire and Swift foundd themselves far more amusing and clever than I do. I suppose it’s nice to be clever, but why not just say what you have to say? Oh well, at least Sociology is interesting.

I must say that I’m a little apprehensive about starting at USM next semester. I have never attended a major university before. It should be an interesting experience.

Elections

This is the first time I have ever had the opportunity to be eligible to vote during an election that features a primary for both parties. It has been an educational experience. It seems a bit ironic that I’m really starting my first classes pertinent to my major while we have a major national election going on. It gives me many opportunities to learn about the real life applications of my major.

This election cycle has given us some strange twists and turns. We have, unfortunately, ended up with ole’ John McCain as the Republican nominee. I’m not a big fan of McCain by any stretch. He has not just sponsored, but written several abominable acts of legislation like McCain-Feingold and the McCain-Kennedy amnesty bill. He is not a conservative. I would not characterize him as a liberal either. John McCain is not my first choice as a Presidential candidate. In fact, he is pretty close to the bottom of my list. That being said, I think he will be vastly superior than any of the Democrat nominees at furthering the conservative cause. He is pro-life, he is very hawkish, he is for a balanced budget, he has said that if he were to appoint a Supreme Court judge that appointee would closely resemble the current Chief Justice John Roberts (who is an excellent judge imho). So, despite his warts and flaws, of which there are many, he will be vastly superior to any democrat nominee. I’m not saying I am going to turn into a fanboy for McCain by any means, but he is absolutely the best option available that I can see.

Politique

Filed at 1:25 pm under Life and Politique by Stephen

A disclaimer before I get started here; this post is not meant to offend anyone. I simply wanted to write down my musings on some points that were brought up on my brothers blog. I am not picking a fight or picking on anyone.

Just wanted to get that squared away first.

I read today on my bro’s blog that he is fed up with modern politics. Now, by all reasonable standards, I’d say most Americans should be fed up with modern politics. Heck, I’m a Political Science major and I’m fed up with modern politics.

It is completely understandable that people be fed up with the line of crap we have been handed for years. Nobody likes being lied to. I know I don’t. American politics may have it’s fair share of problems, that we can all agree on. I believe the point where my brother and myself seem to diverge is in what to do about it.

I found myself in a place not very dissimilar to my bro’s conclusion a few years ago. I saw politics as a means for the powerful to mess over the little guy. I saw politics as a place where people who like to argue could argue. I saw politics as a gigantic waste of money and a gargantuan waste of time. I saw politics as a formerly noble ideal that had been hijacked by the idiots who ran the country. Basically, I didn’t vote, and I thought people who did were retarded. I had a very hard time seeing how us little individuals could ever find a candidate who was worth voting for. I didn’t want to hold my nose and vote for some guy who would say one thing, get into office and then do something totally different because his money backers demanded it. The idea of politics was more than a little revolting to me. This was my state of mind regarding politics when I was about 20 years old.

I had always considered myself a patriotic kind of guy. I was in Boy Scouts, I knew the Pledge of Allegiance by heart, I could sing the National Anthem yadda yadda. With this in mind, I never thought that the country was the problem, I just saw the political leaders as leeches on our great country. When 9/11 happened, I seriously considered joining the military, but my mom begged me not to. I suppose it was not too long afterwards that I read a quote that has forever changed the way I see things.

“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing. “

I don’t disagree for a moment that politicians in America leave much, if not all, to be desired. I do respectfully disagree that our response should be to abandon the opportunity to vote because the options are not to our liking. The American political system is very far from perfect, but it is by far the greatest form of government that has ever been given to man. If we really do care about the rights and priveledges that we enjoy as Americans, than we should not abandon our fate into the hands of others.

If we truly value our status as American citizens we cannot abandon our country to those who would abolish everything we stand for. If there is not a politician who adheres to our values, we should vote for one who most closely represents us. For if we do not, and allow those who are diametrically opposed to our worldview to have free reign over our political system, everything we stand for will blown away like chaff in the wind. The decisions we make today will shape the world that our children and grandchildren grow up in. We may not be able to fight for independence, liberty, and our inalienable rights as our founding fathers did, but we can fight for those very same ideals at the ballot box. This fight will not be won quickly. This is a long term fight. Lets not be members of the microwave generation and expect all our results to come to fruition immediately. It will take time, and energy, and constant vigilance.

In a nutshell, if we don’t like the options or the system we have in place how do we expect to change it if we abandon our only way to change it. Abstaining from voting does not fix the problem, it worsens it. If we don’t like the options available, choose the one that most closely resembles your beliefs. There is no candidate that represents you perfectly unless you yourself run for office.

Again, I am not picking a fight. My brother makes some excellent points in his post. I don’t disagree with his assessment for the most part, I only disagree on the response to that assessment.

I finally finished with this semester at school. It’s been a wild ride. The classes were rarely what I expected when the semester began.

It feels good to have all of that behind me. I got A’s and B’s for all the grades I got back so far. I start next semester sometime around the 12th of January.
